Best Bean Burger Recipe
By Catherine Auerbach
The COVID-19 pandemic and being under quarantine has forced us to find new hobbies to fill our time. For me, this hobby has been cooking. I’ve found myself spending more and more time in the kitchen, looking up recipes on the web, and even thinking up recipes of my own. One of my favorite recipes I’ve learned to cook over quarantine has been these delicious vegetarian bean burgers, which go well with an easy homemade spicy mayo. My recipe is inspired by Tiktok chef @jeremyscheck ’s bean burgers, but has been tweaked to be a little spicier. I make these multiple times a week — they’re packed with protein, take only 20 minutes to make from start to finish, and can be made with any can of beans or chickpeas in your pantry.
Ingredients
1 can black beans, rinsed
2 tsp chili powder
¼ tsp red chili flakes
2 tsp Garlic powder
1 tsp Oregano
2 tsp Berbere
⅛ tsp Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Two cloves minced garlic
1 egg
2 tsp Sriracha sauce
2 tbsp Panko bread crumbs
2 tsp Nutritional yeast (optional)
Four burger buns
Mayonnaise
Bean Burger Recipe (makes four burger patties)
Prep:
Rinse and drain one can of beans or chickpeas and place in a medium-sized bowl.
Add your spices. You don’t have to stick to these exact measurements; if you’re wanting a little extra spice, add an extra shake of red chili flakes. If you’re using a pepper grinder, I recommend grinding 5-6 rounds of pepper into the bowl.
Add your egg and panko breadcrumbs. Nutritional yeast is optional — it’s just there to add a little extra protein and help with binding the mixture. (But don’t stress if you don’t have any in your kitchen).
