Arguably, the most vital set of decisions a president elect has to make is who they are going to put on their cabinet. The people in a president’s cabinet make a plethora of vital decisions on topics such as our economy, climate change, COVID-19 regulations and more. President elect Joe Biden has already made several decisions on who he plans to put on his cabinet as president and it says a lot about the presidency he is going to have, whether it be four or eight years.

Record Breaking

Throughout Biden’s run for presidency, Biden was and still is popular because of his progressive beliefs on controversial topics including racial justice, women’s rights, healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights, and much more. Several of Biden’s predicted cabinet picks represent those beliefs undoubtedly. During Biden’s presidency, he will be breaking barriers. Janet Yellen is predicted to be the first female Treasury secretary in U.S. history. Alejandro Mayorkas who came to the U.S. as a child in 1960, as a result of the Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro, is predicted to be the first Latino tapped to lead the Department of Homeland Security. Biden’s entire finance team is set to be an entirely female staff, and these are just a few of Joe Biden’s groundbreaking picks. The stark difference between Donald Trump’s mainly caucasion cabinet and Joe Biden’s diverse cabinet are what so many Americans are in deep need of. Through his decision to pick such a wide variety of people from such different cultural, racial and economic backgrounds, Biden will continue to send the message that he sent on his campaign. “As long as a person’s alive, they have the ability and obligation to strive”.

Controversial Picks

Despite his diverse cabinet appointees, Biden has some picks in mind that people are not as excited for, including the very controversial Neera Tanden. Controversial tweets are something that Americans have been forced to familiarize themselves with over the past four years due to the fact that a lot of the information, whether it be false or true, our current president Donald Trump tweeted.  Who would have thought that arguably one of Donald Trump’s fiercest opponents would have controversial tweets coming from his side as well. Neera Tanden who hopes to be confirmed by the senate for a position as Office of Management and Budget has recently deleted over 1,000 tweets – tweets that have extreme claims about Russia, Mitch Mconnell, Donald Trump and much more. Many of the senators that will potentially be making the decision on whether or not Tanden will be confirmed to office. One senator from Texas, Senator Coryn called Tanden “Mr Biden’s “worst nominee so far.”

Who else will be on the ticket?

Before Biden made the record breaking announcement of Kamala Harris as the vice presidential nominee (now vice president elect), twitter and other social media outlets went viral when several former presidential candidates including Andrew Yang, Pete Buttigeg and Elizabeth Warren were seen travelling to visit Biden. At the time, Biden had announced that his vice presidential nominee would be female. This trip meant that Elizabeth Warren could possibly become the vice presidential nominee or that maybe Buttegieg and Yang would be on Biden’s ticket in some way. Now five months later, is it still possible that this will happen? In the past, for the most part, the most presidential candidates would do after dropping out of the race is endorse the president they support. However, this time around former 2020 Presidential candidates have done much more than just endorse Biden. Andrew Yang and his family recently moved to Georgia in hopes to help get democratic senators elected  in the Georgia runoff – a move that if successful will make the Biden administration much more capable of achieving its goals through a democratic Congress. This is just one example of the many ways Buttegieg, Yang and Warren have supported Biden. Many people believe that because of the true dedication and support Buttegieg, Yang and Warren have shown Biden they deserve to have a position on his ticket. Is it possible that these avid supporters will become presidential staff?
