That one pair of denim, brilliant red shirt from the 90’s or even a collectable item that you will never touch again, can make all of the difference when you bring it to the Girl Up clothing drive for the organization Hearts of Gold. Girl up is that club at WESS that aims to advance girls’ skills, rights, and opportunities to be leaders around the world. The club decided to raise awareness and funds for homeless women and children that need support in our community.

Hearts of Gold is an organization that aids homeless women and children by providing services that supports and creates opportunities from private tutoring to providing school supplies for homeless children. For example, In 2018, the Hearts of Gold organization was able to give out their 1,000th backpack to children who could not afford school materials. Heart of Gold’s mission is to “prepare transition out of the New York City shelter system to permanent homes” through stabilizing, supporting, and sustaining women through the transition.

The organization has a store called The Thrifty Hog which opened in May of 2010 to create jobs for the mothers that are a part of the program. The organization provides homeless women a chance to succeed and thrive independently by having a stable job and living wage. The remaining proceeds from the store fund programs and services for the Hearts of Gold organization.

By donating to the clothing drive, you have a chance to help make a real difference in the lives of the mothers and their children. There is no limit to the amount of clothing items that you bring as long as it is in good condition and follows policy, linked here. The donated clothing will go to the Thrifty Hog store which raises money for the women and provides jobs for the women helped by the Hearts of Gold organization. We cannot stand idly by, you can make a huge difference to the lives of these women and their children.

If you have any clothing that you would like to donate please bring them to the main office between June 7 and June 11.
